A brief history of Kingsport 911: October 31, 1980 Kingsport began operating what is known as central Dispatch, combining both city fire and police dispatch personnel and public works dispatchers, for a total of eight dispatchers, two per shift. 1988 Kingsport installed 9-1-1 with two tabletop sets; this was a cooperative effort with Sullivan County and Bristol, Tennessee. 1990 Kingsport became its own PSAP or public answering point, as we remain today, Kingsport Central Dispatch/9-1-1 is the answering point for all the residents within the city. Central dispatch also dispatches medical Calls for the entire lower or western end of Sullivan County. The Future Where is 9-1-1 going? Who knows? Dispatchers and responders are going to have many new tools. With the use of newer computer software and hardware, Our future is only limited by our imagination.
